Why you should plan a Babymoon

Congratulations! You’re expecting! Suddenly there is a flurry of activity surrounding the impending arrival. But before you welcome that adorable bundle of joy—that also comes with sleepless nights, zero alone time, and mommy brain—make sure to take some time alone with just the two of you. A “Babymoon”, as it’s been dubbed, is a quiet, romantic vacation you take with your partner as a kind of “lass hurrah!” before your baby arrives.

Celebrate

Let’s admit it, babies take a lot of time and energy and despite your best efforts it will not be easy to fit in alone time. Celebrate your last moments of just the two of you and build up those energy reserves! It doesn’t have to be a super long vacation, maybe just a long weekend away, but make sure that it is as relaxing as possible. Something where you can just kick up your feet and not worry about cooking, cleaning, or entertaining.

For a sweet, charming escape for just a few days, drive up to Asheville and stay in the historic Biltmore Hotel or rent a luxury cabin up in the mountains of Blowing Rock. Visit art galleries, drive the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and dine at local foodie spots featuring local produce and meats.

Nearby Babymoon

Or if an ocean breeze is more your style, head down to Charleston and stay in a boutique hotel on King Street and stroll through the historic neighborhoods of grand mansions lit with gas lamps. There is a plethora of cute shops and open air markets and a mouth watering Southern food scene. A little further south you can find relaxing beach cottages for rent on Folley Island or Kiawah Island. Early Fall or late Winter are off peak times so prices are better and you skip the crowds but the weather is still warm
enough to enjoy the scenery.

For longer escapes some ideas include enjoying the temperate weather in Santa Barbara, California, or stay in a charming country bed and breakfast in the mountains of Vermont —especially beautiful in the fall! If you are wanting something a little more exotic but worried about traveling to different countries, the Bahamas is the perfect option. The closes of the Caribbean islands to the U.S., flights are shorter and cheaper, and unlike other Caribbean islands there is a no known risk for the Zika virus there.

Sandals Babymoon

My recommendation would be either the Sandals Royal Bahamian or Sandals Emerald Bay All Inclusive Resorts for the ultimate romantic experience. Enjoy the quiet bliss of a kid-less environment while enjoying a virgin daquari under a palm tree on the beach. Both of these resorts feature several restaurants to choose from, sparkling pools, private beach, and a variety of luxurious rooms with soaking tubs, including some that come with your very own Butler. The resorts are scattered with romantic little nooks, hammocks, and swings to lounge around in.

Another great option would be a cruise to the Bahamas. Three to five night itineraries are easy to find at several ports on the East Coast, including Charleston, S.C. This is what we did for our Babymoon back in 2010 before our oldest son was born. These cruises will almost always stop at a private, cruise ship exclusive beach where all you need to do is enjoy the sparkling, turquoise waters. Pamper yourself at the on board spa and soak up time in the adult only pool areas.

These are just a few ideas for a memorable pre-baby vacation. I hope my suggestions help you decide on the perfect destination—remember to enjoy every moment.

Dreamy Maternity Portraits in Studio

dreamy maternity in studio flowing cream dress

Dreamy Maternity

Momma E came in to model this cream dress for our studio look book. The dress photographed like a dream. Momma E wore it well. Don’t you all think she looks amazing? I love how it shows off her baby bump but is not too revealing. Leave her some love in the comments on these dreamy maternity portraits!

Some moms to be don’t want to show a lot of skin and this is a great way to celebrate your pregnancy without feeling exposed. Adding on a wrap or shawl could give you even more coverage if desired. This dress would also make a great post delivery momma and baby portrait.

Hopefully we can try it out when this little guy arrives this summer. Your family can’t wait to meet you little one! I look forward to meeting you when you visit the studio for your newborn portrait session. Thanks again Momma E for coming in and modeling my dresses I really appreciate it.

How to Save Money as a New Parent

Alright I have a new guest on the blog today Breanna Sykes is here with us from Bridge Financial Partners with a few tips to save money as a new mom or dad. Breanna has two small children at home. She enjoys helping clients create a budget so that they can save and grow the money they make.

How to Save Money as a New Parent.

Being a new parent is overwhelming and expensive. You are given advice, whether you asked for it or not, and you are suddenly thrown into this world of expensive baby items. If you’ve found your way to this post then I’m going to assume you are looking for advice on saving money. I have a few suggestions to help.

First, buy used or accept hand me downs. Children are messy and babies grow fast. There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on clothes when they grow like crazy and stain everything in sight. This also works for baby items like swings, cribs, play mats, rockers and all sorts of expensive gadgets. Even better, borrow these items from a friend or family member first to see if your child even likes it. I once splurged on a very expensive “must have” swing that my child hated. Thankfully I was able to return it. I’ll link a few great consignment shops in the area at the bottom of this post.

Another great way to save money as a new parent is to find the freebies. Most hospitals send you home with supplies like diapers and blankets. There are also sites like pampers that will send you free supplies. Keep an eye out for coupons and sign up for samples. There are tons of ways to get free baby items. The Krazy Coupon Lady put together a list of places to get free items on her page (KrazyCouponLady).

What can you do with the money you saved? Starting a savings plan early gives you the opportunity to contribute what you can when you can. There are different options including your bank’s savings account or an educational savings plan like a 529 plan. Your choice depends on your specific situation so talk to a financial professional to learn more. Here is a link to some more information on 529 plans (Saving for College).

Beach Maternity Portraits

Maternity portraits at the beach

So I had the idea for this environmental maternity portrait session at the beach before she was even expecting. I told my dear friend Jen that if she was to have another little one we needed to get an awesome dress and photograph her at the beach. She had just had a little miracle baby girl at the time and thought for sure her pregnancy days were behind her. When she called and told me she was expecting again I asked what color I should order the dress in. I was not going to wait too late or let her change her mind. It wasn’t until later we realized her perfect pregnancy portrait opportunity window fell in the dead of winter.  We planned this beach maternity portraits session for late February as late as we were comfortable waiting.

Baby it’s cold outside

I know she loves me because she was very pregnant and very very cold. I mean she was all in too and I love her for it. She had hair and makeup done that morning. I think it is important for all moms to be pampered and feeling their most beautiful before a maternity session. Doesn’t she look gorgeous? I think she always looks beautiful.  It was so amazing to hear how these images made her feel that beauty after she saw the proofs. I love being able to capture life’s miracles for my clients and friends. Showing them how beautiful they are during these life changing times makes my job even more fulfilling.

The painted look

Two of these images, one from the beach and one of the wood scene I had digitally painted. When they are printed on watercolor paper or onto canvas they look just like a painting. I planned this portrait session with this painting art piece theme in mind. This is a new option for Insley Photography clients. I wanted to create dramatic images like these that will hang on my clients’ wall for years to come. This enhancement of my photographs will add to the look and feel of the photographic statement art pieces in your home.

Thank you again Jennifer for helping me bring my vision to reality and being such a trooper in the freezing cold temperatures. Love you girl.

Beautiful Pregnancy

Beautiful pregnancy

Beautiful Pregnancy

This is something I have been thinking about adding to my pregnancy portrait portfolio for a little while. First I had to find the right Mommy-to-be to want these type of poses. Not every women likes this style or even feels comfortable posing for a beautiful pregnancy photograph. Then I had to get the lighting and pose just right to bring these beautiful pregnancy photographs to my audience. Nude portraits have always been controversial and sharing them with the world can be risky. These beautiful pregnancy portraits are meant to be empowering to the mom. They give Moms-to-be the opportunity to show the world just what she can do with grace and beauty. Creating and caring for a precious new life is awe inspiring. I believe pregnancy should be portrayed in this way. I know I have said this before but I think all pregnant women are stunning. The beauty and strength demanded of the human body to carry a baby is the most precious miracle I can capture as a portrait artist. This avenue is something I wish to continue to grow and develop in my personal and professional photography. Thanks for letting me share my vision.
