Celebrating Motherhood in 2023 with Limited Edition Sessions and an Art Exhibit for You!

Feel like a model for the day while we create once-in-a-lifetime motherhood portraits you will cherish more each year.

Join me in celebrating motherhood in 2023.

What’s this all about? I’m celebrating motherhood in 2023 in a big way. I will be photographing 23 moms-to-be in 2023 for my celebrating motherhood project. I’ll be arranging a photography exhibit and celebration of this special time in every mother’s life for our participants by the end of this year.

Whether you are 6 weeks or 8 months pregnant right now, we’d love for you to be a part of it!

The portrait sessions take place at our fort mill studio at the time that is comfortable for you based on the consultation with Alicia.

newborn love stories: expecting a baby, Charlotte, NC, Fort Mill, SC, Tega Cay, SC, maternity portrait, celebrate motherhood

Why now? Because motherhood in 2023 is hard, culturally, we have so many expectations. Keep the kids happy, healthy, active, on grade level; the list goes on. Keep the house show ready. Oh, and don’t let your career suffer while you do all the other things. Don’t have kids too early or too late. It’s all too much.

I will focus on documenting the incredible super power of motherhood.

First, creating new life is a superpower, one that should be celebrated. I want to honor that superpower with beautiful, professional portraits for mommas-to-be so you can remember how incredible you really are!

I also happen to know many moms who give themselves such a hard time when the babies are young, but when their babies are 20-something they look back at those photographs with their kids and think, wow, what was I so worried about? Because all they see is the love they felt for their child. As a motherhood photographer, it’s my duty to document this pregnancy season of your children so that you will have  beautiful images to cherish forever.

Mama, it’s time to share these fabulous moments with the world, and I want to do this for you without adding anything to your already-growing to-do list. The truth is that time isn’t going to slow down. But together, we can hit the pause button and capture this season of motherhood.

How it works:

1. Fill out the form below and Alicia will get in touch with you to talk about the best timing, style and other details of your photo shoot.

2. Your photo shoot starts with hair and make up to help you feel pampered and like your best self.

3. You will view your portraits and will choose your favorites right after your shoot or a few days later.

4. At the end of 2023 we will arrange a celebration for our participants with a gallery exhibit of the photographs and women’s stories of what it means to you to have your baby.

Will you help me make the ‘Celebrating Motherhood Project’ a success?

If you are expecting a baby in 2023. I’m inviting you to take part in my Celebrating Motherhood project in 2023. I welcome you to share this with other mamas who might love this.

The time has come

for you to

exist in photographs.

Statement from Alicia “I’ve been photographing pregnancy and babies for over 18 years. I have documented this special time for so many local families. And what I’ve noticed is how precious and meaningful this time is for a mom and the entire family. And yet how fast it passes by. It really feels like a blur. I believe that it’s crucial to remember as much detail of all the hope, joy, anticipation and love that you feel during this time and celebrate YOU, the mom and the new life that you are about to bring to the world. You are creating life inside your body, if that’s not a super power I don’t know what is.”

Fort Mill’s Featured Newborn Myths

big brother baby sister, Fort Mill newborn photography

Over the years, I’ve photographed hundreds of Fort Mill newborns for their first official portrait. I love documenting this for parents with my stress-free portrait process. For more information on when to schedule your newborn portrait session, please visit this resource.

Sweet boy snuggled up

So, I’ve been asked a lot lately about newborn portraits and some expectations from first-time parents that aren’t realistic. So I thought we would do quick myths versus reality post today to walk you through the top three myths.

The Top Three Newborn Portrait Myths

1.) Can We Get a Portrait of My Newborn Smiling?

Can we get a portrait of my newborn smiling? The answer is probably not. I apologize to the first-time parents who have seen my work and think that an adorable smiling newborn is the norm. It’s really like seeing a unicorn and taking a photo. Some days we just get lucky, but the reality is newborns are expected to smile by three months old. That’s normal. And I photograph babies between 5-14 days old. So those adorable smiles you saw are just plain luck. Some babies smile in their sleep, and we get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to click the shutter at the right time. Most of the time, it’s just not possible. Nothing I say or do will encourage a smile from a newborn this young.

2.) Can we Get a Portrait of My Baby Looking at the Camera?

Here again, that milestone is around three months. Why, you ask? Baby’s vision and ability to focus just doesn’t line up with what’s going on in a professional camera. According to this AOA article about infant vision, “Their primary focus is on objects 8 to 10 inches from their face or the distance to the parent’s face.” from birth to 4 months of age. As a general rule in professional photography with a standard lens, I need at least 3 feet between my subject and the lens to properly get them in focus. That’s at minimum 36 inches. Baby just can’t focus on me at that distance. They may look in my direction, but again, it’s like with the smiles, even if I shoot fast, it’s a lucky shot to get both eyes looking into the camera.

Secondly, babies at this age are very sleepy; just getting them to open their eyes is a feat. Newborns sleep between 16-18 hours a day during the first two weeks.

3.) Why Not Wait a Few Weeks to Take Newborn Portraits?

So now I hear the wheels turning. Why not wait a few weeks and photograph them a bit older or a bit bigger? Here are a few reasons for you.

  • Baby acne – ugh, not a fun thing to think about, but it happens a lot, and it starts around two weeks old
  • Cradle cap – this is similar to acne but on the scalp starts around three weeks old
  • The newborn curl – Eek, so sweet. Honestly, this is what so many moms choose newborn portraits to capture. That newborn curl is the sweetest position and reminds us that our baby just spent nine months inside our bodies growing and becoming a baby.
pink sweetness, newborn portrait of a baby girl, natural posing, Charlotte, NC, Clover SC

Baby Sleep Doctor tells us, “Most babies grow out of the “newborn curl” within the first few weeks of their life” sad but true. This is the number one reason I encourage moms to call me before their baby arrives so we can get them in during the precious newborn stage.

Mom holding her newborn for a portrait worth of the family gallery wall.

The thing is, by three weeks old baby is more aware that we are moving her. She may have acne, cradle cap, or not. But she will sleep less soundly as the days go by, she will stretch more, and if you want portraits like you see in my gallery, they are best created by two weeks of age. The older baby gets, the longer the session may take, and the more post-processing is required to remove acne. Post-processing takes time and increases your costs for a newborn session.

Your newborn portrait artwork will anchor the wall art without overpowering your theme or asthetic.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Portrait Session

I’ll be honest with you, choosing what to wear for your maternity portrait session can be tricky! Your maternity session is usually between 28-35 weeks of pregnancy. You might not know exactly what size you’ll be or how comfortable you’ll be feeling. Plus, you might only need the outfit for the day of the session. (This is where a studio wardrobe comes in handy.)

I’m here to help! I’ll offer some guidance on what to wear for your maternity session and why you should really consider a maternity photographer with a wardrobe!

Choose Your Maternity Session Style

Before sharing tips on what to wear, I want to back up for a second. First, start with the end in mind and envision what you want to do with these portraits. Are you hoping to print a portrait to hang on the wall? Wanting to add some of these images to your baby’s first album? This will help you start. Second, think about what overall style you’re going for. Do you want a glamorous maternity session? Something more contemporary? Magazine Style? I have a whole guide on just choosing your maternity session style here.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Portraits

Here are a few ideas of what you can wear for your maternity portrait session!

Fitted Dress – This is a beautiful and classic look for your maternity session! A fitted dress shows off your beautiful bump and all your gorgeous curves. I tend to suggest a solid color for this type of dress so that a pattern doesn’t distract from you at all.

Flowy Dress – A gorgeous option for the mama who wants the glam goddess look. We’ll still show off the bump along with your beautiful self with this look. Different poses offer different looks with this style of dress.

Jeans and Top – This is more casual but still so beautiful! We can show off your pregnancy in a way that’s comfortable for you. This simple yet classic look offers the perfect peek at your glowing baby bump!

Barely There – All we need is your gorgeous pregnancy! These are the portraits that you’ll look back on and think, “Wow, my body can do incredible things.” Your body is doing an amazing job growing life. Now is the time to celebrate your superpower.

Insley Photography Studio Wardrobe

This is where the benefit of a studio wardrobe comes into play! Instead of stressing and shopping to try to find the right outfit, you can use one of mine. I have sizes and styles for every mama. On the day of your maternity portrait session, your outfit will be clean, pressed, and waiting for you. How easy is that?! You get to feel like the stunning goddess that you are without having to spend money on an outfit that you’re going to wear once. Bonus you can arrive in your pjs on the day of your photoshoot 😉

Fort Mill Maternity Photography

Mama, I believe that your motherhood journey should be documented and celebrated without adding any to-dos to your growing list. Once you arrive at my Fort Mill studio, you will feel pampered and loved. I want to help you celebrate your sweet baby and be part of your story. The best part is that you can let me do all the work!

What about hair and makeup? I’m so glad you asked 😉 I will coordinate that too. A professional hair and makeup artist can meet you at the studio before your session and help you get ready and feel pampered on your portrait day.

If you have any questions for me or want to schedule your maternity session, give me a call (803) 336-5125 or send me a message here.

6 Reasons Newborn Photography Safety Is My Top Concern

There’s a lot on your mind as your prepare to welcome your new baby. If you’re thinking about scheduling a newborn photography session, you might have some questions about safety. I’m here to explain newborn photography safety and why it’s so important.

Newborn photography is such a special gift for you and your baby. Your family will have these first official portraits to look back on for the years to come. Plus, meeting my newest client is always such a highlight for me. This is why your newborn’s safety throughout the session is of utmost importance to me.

As a professional, I follow important newborn photography safety guidelines and ensure that your baby is comfortable and safe throughout the session. Let me share a little more about newborn photography safety and what I do to keep your sweet baby safe.

Newborn Photography Safety

Training and Experience – I complete ongoing newborn photography training to keep up with the latest techniques. My most recent training was with the world-renowned newborn photographer Ana Brandt just this September.

Baby-led Photography – We very much let your baby run the show during the session. We set up different backdrops and attempt different poses, but ultimately, it’s up to your baby.  We never force a pose that could be unsafe or uncomfortable. Some babies don’t like to lay on a certain side or lift their arm a specific way. And that’s okay; we aren’t here to make them do anything they don’t want to, babies are just tiny people with very big opinions 😉

Gentle Posing – With that said, we will try very gently posing your baby into our desired pose using the latest techniques and my years of experience to ensure your baby is totally comfortable. You’ll be surprised how quickly we can get the shot once your baby is in the best pose.

In Tune with Baby’s Needs – We’ll make sure your baby is warm, cozy, and fed. And feeding, changing or soothing breaks are needed and encouraged. Your baby’s comfort is the most important thing during the session.

Never in a Rush – I schedule my newborn portrait sessions with plenty of time so that we’re never rushed or pressured to “get the shot” quickly. We can take our time if needed.

Speaking of rushing, sometimes a parent or older sibling is in a hurry because of work or school. I get that, and we can work around it. Just let me know, and we’ll take those portraits first.

Safely Posing with Siblings – We want to capture the perfect portrait of your older child holding your newborn. During the session, we’ll make sure that everyone is comfortable trying this pose. If not, we can make a composite from several images to create the perfect image for your family. Baby’s safety is my number one rule, and we never ask a young child to hold an infant if they don’t want to. Again we can work around even the feistiest personalities.

Finally a note about what you see on social media- Every once in a while, I get sent a request in the form of an image from social media. We know Pinterest has some amazing things to see. Often the images that grab your eye aren’t created the way you think. For example, the ones with the elephant. We all know no one is letting an elephant hold their infant, but some of the more subtle ones might seem doable. They are not! We will never hang your baby from a swing, wreath, or anything high off the ground and risk a fall. Never. We even put a beanbag under very tired parents just in case. Did I mention newborn photography safety is my #1 rule?

How to Get the Perfect Newborn Portrait

My secret to getting the perfect newborn portrait for you is patience and experience. Newborn sessions are a sweet, special time for me because I get to meet and document your brand-new baby. With love and experience, I can capture the portrait that you’re dreaming of.

1st Birthday Pizza Smash Photos | Fort Mill, SC

fort mill, sc pizza smash session, King of Fire Pizza

What’s better than celebrating your sweet baby turning one? By celebrating with pizza, of course! Not just any pizza, but award-winning pizza. Milestone sessions allow us to capture every major milestone during your baby’s first year. It’s seriously amazing to look back on their newborn portrait vs. their 1st-year portrait and see how much they’ve grown. You’ll hardly believe your eyes. Another popular 1st birthday session is a cake smash which is also fun.

When my client reached out wanting a pizza smash, I was all in. Dad owns King of Fire Pizza in Fort Mill, SC, so you can say that pizza runs in the family for this little guy. (PS, if you haven’t had their pizza, you need to try it!)

pizza smash photos, Charlotte, NC

Not only is this precious boy part of a pizza legacy, but he’s also one tough fighter. Mom spent a few weeks in the hospital before he was born. He was born seven weeks early and spent a month in the hospital growing and learning to eat before going home. It’s amazing to see what he’s always accomplished at just one-year-old!

During this portrait session, the star of the show had his three older sisters with him. You could tell they adore their baby brother!

1st Year Pizza Smash Session

This session was supreme! I loved being able to celebrate this special boy turning one while honoring his family legacy. I think the only downside was that this session made me hungry 😉

baby eating pizza smash one year portraits, Charlotte, NC

I feel like I should mention that the pizza wasn’t hot! Your baby’s safety is always my number one priority during every session. Mom and dad were right there helping their little guy get the best slice. He’s already learning the ropes of the family business.

Pizza legacy portraits, one year old baby boy and dad, Fort Mill, SC

During a first-year portrait session, I always make sure to schedule ample time so that we can get the perfect shot. We’re never in a rush or stressed. It’s all about having fun and celebrating your baby!

After the session, we’ll meet for an image reveal! It’s so fun to look at every single image and soak in the entire day. All you have to do is choose your favorites and how you want to print the portraits. I’ll take care of the rest! I order and hand-deliver your family portrait artwork. Heck, I even help hang it up so that this important task is checked off your to-do list and you can get back to enjoying your family.

How to Make Your 1st Year Portrait Session Special

While your family might not own a pizza business, there might be something else that you’d love to incorporate into your child’s 1st-year portrait session. Your child starring in this milestone session makes it perfect enough, but please let me know if there is something special you would want to include. Maybe it’s heirloom jewelry or accessory piece, a book, or even a keepsake from a family member. All my portrait sessions are a collaboration so let’s get together and come up with something creative for you.

Watching my littlest clients grow throughout the first year of their lives is so special to me! I get to experience the joy of watching them grow into their own personalities. If you’re looking for a photographer to capture every milestone, or it’s time for 1st-year portraits, please reach out to me here. I would love to be part of telling your child’s story.

Simple I’m going to ask you all about them and use that information to connect with them at the studio. It’s going to be me and the kids against you. Charlotte Newborn Photographer Little Love Stories: Kelly & Alyssa Dream Baby

Dream Baby, newborn girl, pink, Indian Land sc, Marvin NC, Pineville NC

Interview Before Her Dream Baby Arrived

Tell me your family story!

  • We were surprised to find out we were expecting but are patiently awaiting the arrival of our sweet princess. Earlier this year our three year old told us she met her sister in her dream but she wasn’t real yet. She would not be real until later. About two months later I found out I was pregnant with a little girl.

Describe your pregnancy journey. Have you had any surprises (good or bad)?

  • The pregnancy overall was a surprise but thankfully we are both healthy. COVID has definitely changed things a lot and no one knows I’m pregnant except my immediate family.

What do you like to imagine for your child’s future?

  • I know this little girl is going to be a light in this world because she has already been such a light during this dark year.

What would you like your baby to know about YOU (their beautiful mama!)?

  • How much I adore her, how I didn’t plan for her but she is anything but an accident.

Finish this sentence. Motherhood is …

  • You are beautiful and stronger than you even know

Why are beautiful photos important for you and your family?

  • They are so important to capture these moments in time.

Interview After Alyssa arrived

Tell us about the first moments with your baby?

  • Our first moments with Alyssa were so precious. After she was born they had to take her to NICU to monitor her so initially we could only see her for a second but I was just amazed at how beautiful and little she was. I just kept saying she looks just like me.

Any surprises in labor and delivery? Anything you didn’t expect?

  • The entire experience was very dramatic. I fainted after my anesthesia, Alyssa had turned unexpectedly and labor was delayed and she didn’t cry immediately. I just kept praying let my baby be ok. For our last child, she definitely had a very dramatic entrance.

What’s the best part of being a new mom?

  • The best part of this birth was just meeting the little person that kicked me for nine months. Also learning what people meant by not realizing how much this new addition completed our family.

What’s the hardest part?

  • Making sure everyone feels important and loved.

What surprises has this month brought you?

  • Just so much joy and excitement to a year that carried a lot of uncertainty and hardships.

Can you imagine a sweeter story of a dream baby? Me either, Are you expecting? I’d love to help you capture your dream baby’s newborn stage. I’m now booking newborn love stories sessions during the last trimester of pregnancy. If you are expecting a baby now is the time to get in touch. Drop me your contact information below

Charlotte Baby Photographer Little Love Stories: Baby Kam is 2 months old

2 months old, mommy and me, baby boy, Charlotte, NC, Tega Cay, SC, Fort MIll, SC

Katie and Kameron Two Months Old

Congratulations Mom your baby is two months old. How are you feeling after this last month? Physically, emotionally or mentally. (remember there are no right or wrong answers)

  • We are starting to get the hang of his routine! Since he’s sleeping more we’re better rested physically. Now that we’re more confident as parents since we’ve learned his hunger/sleep/I want to play cues it’s easier to handle the ups and downs of the day.

What has been your favorite part of this month with baby?

  • How playful he’s getting and interacting with toys. He looks forward to tummy time and gets frustrated if we pick him up when he isn’t ready for it to be over.

What has been a struggle? Was it a surprise or expected?

  • His two month growth spurt was HORRIBLE. It was a surprise because out of nowhere our happy chill baby was gone. Nothing we did for three days could help console him. He spent a majority of the time swaddled, snuggled, sleeping or eating.

How has your relationship changed over the last few months?

  • Now that Kameron is older and able to go longer without naps and is sleeping better at night, we’re able to do things as a family or just the two of us a lot easier. When my husband gets off work it’s no longer “can you please hold the baby so I can shower/use the bathroom”. We also recognize the need for just the two of us date nights, so we decided we need to do something at least once a month baby-free.

What would you tell a brand new mom about the first months with baby?

  • Don’t be discouraged if something you figured out stops working. Babies change so much from week to week something they like/dislike one day could be the opposite the next. Also parental instincts are real. If you sense you should/shouldn’t do something follow your gut. You might be tempted to ask people but you’ll get 10 different opinions anyways 🙂

A little magic to remind us to be thankful

a little magic to remind us to be thankful, Charlotte NC, Fort Mill, SC, Tega Cay, SC

I was introduced to this amazing girl by the Charlotte chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. Talia was the 2021 Charlotte Girl of the Year Honoree and honored hero! They shared this about her story

“In June of 2018, Talia had her tonsils removed in hopes of fixing frequent headaches and Sleep Apnea. Her doctor sent her tonsils out for a biopsy that soon revealed that she had T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. Now, when Talia isn’t doing treatment, she loves to read, play basketball, and spend time with her three younger siblings. We are so inspired by Talia’s bravery on this journey!”

Talia has an infectious smile. And man does she have plans for her future. She reads any chance she gets, she practices for her basketball career in the immediate future. Plus she’s already preparing for a future in medicine. This young woman is going places and taking names. Talia has a bright future and I can’t wait to see how she changes the world for the better.

When I asked about her favorite things and she mentioned a few book series she loves. You know I had to create a fun portrait with a little magic 😉 Might be my favorite book series also. Wingardium Leviosa
