A little magic to remind us to be thankful

a little magic to remind us to be thankful, Charlotte NC, Fort Mill, SC, Tega Cay, SC

I was introduced to this amazing girl by the Charlotte chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. Talia was the 2021 Charlotte Girl of the Year Honoree and honored hero! They shared this about her story

“In June of 2018, Talia had her tonsils removed in hopes of fixing frequent headaches and Sleep Apnea. Her doctor sent her tonsils out for a biopsy that soon revealed that she had T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. Now, when Talia isn’t doing treatment, she loves to read, play basketball, and spend time with her three younger siblings. We are so inspired by Talia’s bravery on this journey!”

Talia has an infectious smile. And man does she have plans for her future. She reads any chance she gets, she practices for her basketball career in the immediate future. Plus she’s already preparing for a future in medicine. This young woman is going places and taking names. Talia has a bright future and I can’t wait to see how she changes the world for the better.

When I asked about her favorite things and she mentioned a few book series she loves. You know I had to create a fun portrait with a little magic 😉 Might be my favorite book series also. Wingardium Leviosa

Cancer tried to steal her little girl when she was just 3 years old.

Brandi shares “We were lucky we got to keep our girl, so I keep fighting back for our friends still fighting, those we lost and those yet to be diagnosed. I am incredibly honored and determined to raise $430,005 by June 5, 2021, for the 43 children a day diagnosed and the 5 children a day who do not survive.

I wasn’t ready to be a cancer mom, but I was built for it.”

Charlotte NC Newborn Photographer: We planned…, New Baby Just Laughs At Our Plans

We had planned…, A New Baby Just Laughs At Our Plans

My fiance and I became engaged on March 13 of this year – literally days before everything crashed down around us. We were just beginning to plan a wedding when we found out I was pregnant in early April. Needless toPilot legacy baby portrait, Charlotte NC, Fort MIll, SC say, plans have changed. We focused instead on buying our dream house and preparing to meet our little boy, Owen. My fiance, Chris, is amazing and has been so excited about this time in our lives!

Describe your pregnancy journey. Have you had any surprises (good or bad)? *

I got pregnant much faster than anticipated. My fiance and I agreed I should get off birth control because we knew we were planning to start a family after we were married. I’m 37, so we honestly thought it would be tougher. I got pregnant one month off birth control even though my Dr. prepared us for a long journey. What a surprise! we are so excited. It’s been newborn baby, blue, Charlotte, NC, Matthews NC, Fort Mill, NCa tough pregnancy (Still have morning sickness), but trying to find the joy and embrace this season.

What do you imagine for your child’s future? *

I want him to be HAPPY. I want him to have choices, to know he’s loved, to love others, and to be kind.

newborn baby, mechanic legacy, Charlotte, NC, Matthews NC, Fort Mill, NC

What would you like your baby to know about YOU? *

I’d like him to know that I’m not perfect, but am going to try every day to be the best mom possible for him.

Is there an encouraging message you would like to share with other expecting mothers? *

You’re going to be an amazing mom!

What else would you like to share?*   Mom with new baby, Charlotte NC, Fort Mill SC

I really want to remember this special time. I know the newborn phase can be crazy and I don’t want to have it go by and only remember it being a haze. I’d love to have photos of this time and always remember this new time for us.

Baby is here!

Tell us about the first moments with your baby?

Overwhelming. We had to do a c-section, so the first few moments weren’t exactly as planned but seeing him for the first time made me realize the only thing that matters is having a healthy baby boy. Thankfully my husband was able to be with Owen and hold him until I was out of recovery.

Any surprises in labor and delivery? Anything you didn’t expect?

Music man, baby posed on records, Charlotte NC, Fort MIll SC

I truly was not ready for the physical pain of contractions and the emotional pain of my ideal birth scenario going out the window.

What’s the best part of being a new mom?

Seeing things through his eyes. Everything is brand new to him. Then there are things that are brand new to both of us, like breastfeeding and just figuring it out together has been amazing.

What’s the hardest part?

new baby in mom's belly cast, Fort Mill SC, Indian Land SC, Charlotte NC

Worrying that I’m not doing the right thing all the time. There’s so much I don’t know.

What was it like navigating a pandemic pregnancy?

  • I found out I was pregnant right when everything began to shut down which was very hard for me.  My first OB appt to confirm mysweet newborn, Charlotte NC, Marvin NC pregnancy was over the phone which really messed with me. I was finally able to go in for my 12 week appt but my bf was not allowed to come in to see our baby on the screen. Due to COVID he is still unable to come to my appts and has only seen pictures of our child.  I had a minor scare with placenta previa but I was cleared after a few weeks.

For her to have two supportive parents that can also help her have a love and understanding for others. To help her get through her trials by helping her understand ours.

What would you like your baby to know about YOU (their beautiful mama!)? *

Her moms have worked a long time to get where we are today.

Is there an encouraging message you would like to share with other mothers? *

You’ve got this! Don’t get discouraged everything will be alright! Enjoy the highs and hope the lows go by fast.

Why are beautiful photos important for you and your family? *

I want to capture moments with my child instead of just of my child.

First time mom notes from the first week

Tell us about the first moments with your baby?new mom with baby mom, Rock Hill SC, Charlotte NC, newborn baby girl

The first moments with her were….. mystifying. It was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. I know this sounds dramatic but, it was that and so much more. Taken over with emotions I’ve never felt, relief, and wonder. It seemed like such a dream.

Any surprises in labor and delivery? Anything you didn’t expect?first time mom, Fort Mill SC, Waxhaw NC, newborn baby girl

I had a very easy labor and delivery. That surprised me because, EVERYONE said the first delivery would be the hardest. I got so many stories of 24-30 hours of labor. I was only in active labor for four hours.

What’s the best part of being a new mom?first time mom, Fort Mill SC, Waxhaw NC, newborn baby girl

The best part of being a new mom is, all of it; the sleepless days and nights, the smell of baby, the cuddles. The fact that the baby wants no one else. To see your baby with your spouse and how they start to grow the bond you have.

What’s the hardest part?

first time mom, Fort Mill SC, Waxhaw NC, newborn baby girlThe hardest part of being a new mom is trying to figure out what works for you and your baby while trying not to linger on the thoughts of someone else’s opinions and “advice” wondering if your doing everything right and keeping your baby healthy.

What surprises has this month brought you?

We have no surprises yet…. She seems pretty perfect

Any feedback from your first little love stories portrait session? Anything I can change to make it better?first time mothers, Fort Mill SC, Waxhaw NC, newborn baby girl

I feel like our first session was amazing! We are very reserved people and you were able to get us out of our shell enough to catch it on camera.

PS Notes from a first time mom after one month with her newborn

“Hey Alicia, first time mom, Rock Hill SC, Charlotte NC, newborn baby girl

I looked back at my new mom questionnaire and wanted to change the answer to a question. Parker was only 8 or 9 days and I don’t feel like I was able to properly answer the question. Since Parker will be a month old on Tues. Now I can accurately answer “what surprises has this month brought”?

The surprises this first month has brought were the things no one tells you to expect. Of course the sleepless nights, the sweet cuddles, the love you would feel are what everyone mentioned.

They don’t mention some days in the beginning you’ll forget to eat. You will want to nap when baby sleeps but your brain doesn’t shut off. You’ll be following safe sleep but still wake up with every little noise to make sure your baby is okay. You will not know what to do when your told to take a little time for yourself. Just know it will all be okay! Don’t stress yourself out. Love yourself momma!

I know it’s long but I had to let new moms know how it is. That it is ok for it to be stressful but it will be okay.”

What would you tell your baby now before he is born about your hopes and dreams for her future? What do you want to show him as he grows and changes throughout her childhood? Is it important for him to know you never give up hope?

Never give upnew parents baby boy, indian land, SC, Rock Hill, SC

Never give up on your goals or plans, it’s ok to pivot and roll with the curves life brings.  Sometimes just making a new plan can help open up the opportunities to achieve your goal differently.

17% boy was she surprised

Mom was given 17% chance of conceiving with in vitro, and no chance with natural conception. After years of working with fertility doctors to conceive his parents decided to go with the adoption option. Not long after contacting an adoption service Mom learned much to her surprise, she was pregnant!

Oh my goodness she had a ton of fun and personal ideas and plans for her newborn portrait session. We had a great planning and preparing session at the studio and a big list of images she wanted for his portraits.newborn baby boy, indian land, SC, Charlotte, NC

Again we talked about this for her maternity session but she continued in her newborn session with her calm, confidence in being a new mom without any nerves or concerns.

Finally we were able to create some fabulous portraits of baby Adrian. Our goal to remember and celebrate his newness, his birth and his future to come. But even more importantly we capture the love and connection between his parents and their joy to have a child of their own.

Charlotte North Carolina Newborn Photographer | I’ll be honest it’s hard… interview with a new mom from Little Love Stories

interview with a new mom, one month old, black and white, Charlotte, NC

Katie and Kameron One Month old

Congratulations Mom, your baby is one month old. How are you feeling after the 1st month? Physically, emotionally or mentally. (remember there are no right or wrong answers)

  • To be completely honest, I’m 100% drained physically, emotionally and mentally. Being a mom is HARD and the first month has been really hard. Besides the normal sleep deprivation, my little one has had a
interview with a new mom, one month old, black and white, Charlotte, NC
    Superman
hard time with colic and gas making him miserable every day. When your baby is miserable, it makes you miserable or feel like you’re not doing anything right. Now that we have figured out the root cause making him feel sick I’m starting to feel more confident and content as a mom. Plus I’m starting to get more sleep!

What has been your favorite part of the first month with baby?

  • Watching him do new things almost every day. I’m amazed by how much he changes. I also love seeing how much he lights up seeing his dad, grandparents and other family. He already knows who his people are even at a month old. All the baby snuggles are the best too.

interview with a new mom, one month old, Charlotte, NC

What has been a struggle? was it a surprise or expected?

  • Breastfeeding! Just when I thought I had it down/baby was getting better we took two steps backward. Everyone keeps telling me he’ll go longer between feedings and it gets easier, but every baby is different. I think the biggest thing I’ve learned it’s ok if you need to supplement with formula or pump and give bottles (to give you and your body a break). I didn’t realize how hard it would be to have a little human attached to your body 24/7. I’ve also been diagnosed with postpartum depression and anxiety. It wasn’t a surprise or expected, but something that has been a struggle. I think more moms/their partners should check in on their mental health because my doctor and therapist were so happy we caught it early. Apparently a lot of moms suffer in silence and go untreated, making it harder to work through later. Now that I’m on a plan to treat it I’m enjoying being a mom and my baby.

How has your relationship with your spouse changed over the last few months?interview with a new mom, one month old, Charlotte, NC

  • It has brought us closer together. Our communication and teamwork has had to be on point to get through the 1st month of baby. Part of communicating is checking in on each other’s emotional and physical health, which hasn’t always been a focus for us. The other part is I’m having to rely on my husband more than ever; I’m pretty independent, so the amount of help I’ve had to have from him has been a lot. He’s taken on caring for me and baby amazingly, and it makes me love him even more. We’ve also had to be more intentional to separate being mom/dad from being husband/wife. We try to have husband/wife time every day even if it’s a 10 minute conversation that doesn’t involve talking about the baby.

interview with a new mom, one month old, Charlotte, NC

What would you tell an expecting mom about the first month with baby?

1) Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If someone offers, take it.

2) When you get a break, basic human needs are not self-care (sleeping, showering, eating etc). Go out to get a pedicure or massage or whatever you need mentally to relax even for just an hour.

3) Check in on yourself mentally. If you’re feeling things you think you shouldn’t talk to your doctor. Postpartum depression and anxiety are common, but not something you should have to live with so you can enjoy your baby. Being a new mom is hard enough and you shouldn’t suffer in silence.

Personal side note every word of this interview is pure gold, thank you so much for sharing your words with us, Katie. I want to share them with all the moms to be and new moms who feel like it is just them. -alicia
